A pigeon gets a competition ring (rubber) for the leg when basketing as participation in a competition, when they return home this competition ring has to be placed in a thimble or ring box, after which the thimble with the rubber is put in the pigeon clock, it is then noted that time of arrival of the pigeon is recorded.

The biggest possible thimble was ready in the open position, close to the clock (all this to lose as little time as possible). The pigeon fancier takes his/her arrived pigeon, removes the pigeon from his/her rubber ring, puts it in the smallest part of the thimble, closes it and drops it in the recorder.

 A distance can be calculated on the basis of liberation place and home coordinate, a flight time on the basis of release time and homecoming, by calculating distance and flight time you get an average speed that the pigeon has flown over the route, the pigeon with the highest speed wins the race.

Metal, copper, aluminum, plastic, square, rectangular, round, ball, elongated, slot, or it should be argued that over the years many kinds of observation thimbles or ring boxes were put on the market. Clubs and organizers of important competitions prohibited display thimbles or ring boxes that were not specific to the device, as well as the clock committee of the Belgian Pigeon Fanciers Association, founded in 1952, provided in their regulations that the thimbles or boxes should consist of 2 parts and that no extra holes were allowed in them are applied to make it more difficult for fraudsters.

Een duif krijgt bij inkorving als deelname aan een wedstrijd een wedstrijdring (caoutchouc) om de poot, bij thuiskomst dient deze wedstrijdring in een constateerpotje of ringdoosje gedaan te worden, daarna gaat het potje met de gummie in de constateur, er word dan geconstateerd waarbij het tijdstip van thuiskomst van de duif word vastgelegd.

Het zo groot mogelijke potje stond in open toestand klaar, dichtbij de klok (dit alles om zo weinig mogelijk tijd te verliezen). De duivenmelker pakt zijn/haar thuisgekome duif, ontdoet de duif van zijn/haar gummie, steekt het in het kleinste deel van potje, sluit het potje en dropt het in de constateur.

 Aan de hand van losplaats- en thuiscoördinaat is een afstand te berekenen, aan de hand van lostijd en thuiskomst een vliegtijd, door afstand en vliegtijd te berekenen bekom je een gemiddelde snelheid die de duif heeft gevlogen over het traject, de duif met de hoogste snelheid wint de wedstrijd.

Metaal, koper, aluminium, plastiek, vierkant, rechthoekig, rond, bolletje, langwerpig, sleuf, enfin het moet geen betoog dat door de jaren heen vele soorten constateerpotjes of ringdoosje op de markt werden gebracht. Clubs en inrichters van belangrijke wedstrijden verboden constateerpotjes of ringdoosjes die niet eigen aan het toestel waren, alsook de in 1952 opgerichte konstateurskommissie van de Belgische Duivenliefhebbers Bond voorzag in hun reglementen dat de potjes of doosjes uit 2 delen moesten bestaan en er geen extra gaatjes in mochten worden aangebracht dit om het fraudeurs alweer moeilijker te maken.
